Banana Point and Aourir

Aourir is a small town on the coast road just north of Agadir. Locals and surfers often call it Banana Village because of the banana plantations in its valley, and its point break has taken the same name: Banana Point.

Why bananas?

The plantations grow in the river bed that reaches the sea at Aourir, facing the surf spot. Stalls along the road sell bananas from the valley, and the name has stuck to the town and to the wave.

The wave

Banana Point is a right-hand point break over sand and rock. On a good day it gives long, mellow rides, which makes it popular with beginners who have moved past the whitewater and with intermediate surfers.

It is a different wave from Anchor Point or Killer Point further north: slower, more forgiving and often busy with surf schools. Conditions change with tide and swell, so ask local surfers or a surf school before you go out.

Getting there

Aourir is a short drive north of Agadir, on the way to Tamraght and Taghazout. Shared taxis and local buses run along the coast road, and the spot is reached from the beach in front of the town.

Knock before you drop in

Dropping in means taking off on a wave that another surfer is already riding, usually from closer to the peak. It is the first rule of the line-up: the surfer nearest the breaking part of the wave has priority, and everyone else waits for the next one.

On a crowded, friendly wave like Banana Point, patience goes a long way. Wait your turn, call out if you are going, and paddle wide around people who are riding.

From door knocker to shaka

The Knock Before You Drop In design takes a chased brass door knocker in the shape of a hand, a familiar sight on old doors in Moroccan medinas, and turns it into a surfer’s shaka, with the knocker’s ring attached to a surf leash. Moroccan metalwork meets surf etiquette.
